Getting to know our world one country at a time!
Social Studies/Geography at Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2
Social Studies is concerned with the following major areas:
• The development of inquiry techniques.
• Understanding of basic concepts.
• Value analysis.
• Application of the decision making process to public issues.
• The transmission of our cultural heritage.
It serves to give students:
• An understanding of human society.
• An appreciation of their roles as responsible members of society.
• An opportunity for effective practice of their roles.
At Key Stage 1 students begin to incorporate a unique mode of thought, awareness, and understanding. They are encouraged to widen and deepen their cognitive perspective in order to contribute to their total development as an individual. Students are taught in ways which ensure understanding, empathy, and actively foster their capacity to think for himself/herself.
At Key Stage 2 students are encouraged to express ideas, to think critically, to understand the world around them and to develop their own opinions in an informed way. At this level the course aims to establish further in students the skills, values and attitudes they need to become effective citizens in the contexts of the country and the wider world. The foundations of these skills will have been laid in Years 1 to 3 in the contexts of the school and the community.
