ST. IGNATIUS ‘FIVE STAR’ TEAM WINS STOCK MARKET COMPETITION!

In Term 1 2010, more than 75 students from St. Ignatius, Cayman Prep and High, and John Gray High Schools started chapters of the Saxon Investment Club, capitalizing on the opportunity to get hands-on experience in investing as they simulated the excitement of the New York Stock Exchange.  Each group began the fiscal year with $100,000 in their hypothetical portfolio and chose companies based collectively on their interests or research.

saxon.jpgThe final results were recently announced the St. Ignatius ’FIVE STAR’  team is the overall winner, increasing their portfolio by over $14,600!  The team of Tyler Phillips, Alex Hennings, John Fawkes, Michael Testori and Cristian Crescente get to share USD$3000 of real money!  Congratulations to these talented students!  Thanks to Miss Chenier and Brian Williams, CEO of Saxon Investment, for their commitment to this project!

Welcome to the ENGLISH Department!

“Imagination is more important than knowledge.”  Albert Einstein.

Key Stage 3

At KS3 we study a different unit of work each half term, which includes a prose, poetry and drama text.  Teachers choose the texts to cover, according to the ability of the group and their own interests.

For more information on English at Key Stage 3 please click on the following link: ENGLISH CURRICULUM OVERVIEW - KS3

We use Assessment Based Criteria for each term of work.  The criteria changes each year according to which topic the teacher is teaching at that time.  An example is shown here:  Year 8 - Set 1 - Grade Boundaries

Reading:

Each student is expected to read independently at home on a regular basis; we recommend a MINIMUM of 20 minutes each day.  This should be a prose text, either fiction or non-fiction (and includes comic books).  The library has a great selection of books from our reading list that is added to on a regular basis.  Please check the following link for further information:  KS3 Reading List

Key Stage 4

At KS4 we offer two courses of study: Language and Literature.  Each awards a separate grade.  Students cover a variety of topics and skills, complete coursework and study three texts to be examined. Bonga-Longa Superville

Coloured and vibrant like a rainbow
Making people smile at my sound.
Bringing action, colour, culture and memories to a still life scene.
But underneath this carnival of sound
Is the real me:
Lonely, angry and misunderstood.
Kids treat me harshly,
They hit me hard
And abuse me, like an old rag doll.
My only friend is my caretaker.
He’s gentle and soft, as a mother would treat her child.
He’s the reason I sound…

Beautiful.

Getting to know our world one country at a time!

Social Studies/Geography at Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2     geog-police.png

Social Studies is concerned with the following major areas:
• The development of inquiry techniques.
• Understanding of basic concepts.
• Value analysis.
• Application of the decision making process to public issues.
• The transmission of our cultural heritage.

It serves to give students:
• An understanding of human society.
• An appreciation of their roles as responsible members of society.
• An opportunity for effective practice of their roles.

geog-fireman.pngAt Key Stage 1 students begin to incorporate a unique mode of thought, awareness, and understanding.  They are encouraged to widen and deepen their cognitive perspective in order to contribute to their total development as an individual.  Students are taught in ways which ensure understanding, empathy, and actively foster their capacity to think for himself/herself.

At Key Stage 2 students are encouraged to express ideas, to think critically, to understand the world around them and to develop their own opinions in an informed way.  At this level the course aims to establish further in students the skills, values and attitudes they need to become effective citizens in the contexts of the country and the wider world.  The foundations of these skills will have been laid in Years 1 to 3 in the contexts of the school and the community.
